School started a few weeks ago, so naturally our house is now full of our disgusting kids’ plague germs which will likely stay put until next spring. I’ve already fallen victim, and I hate being sick. I tried to ignore it for a few days – the ol’ if I can’t see you then you can’t see me tactic, which has sadly proved ineffective. Today I felt worse, and have decided pretending I’m not sick is not doing the trick. That said, this Positive Patty hates taking medicine almost as much as she hates being sick, which leaves us with this amazing elixir and the following steps to feel better:
Step 1: Hydrate. Water is so important for health I should be drinking 100 oz a day regardless of being sick or not. That said, a major benefit of water is to flush crap out of your body (both literally and figuratively) including sickness; so bottoms up!
Step 2: Sleep. This one is easy as I feel like I could sleep 22 hours a day right now…except for my 3 darling angels who need me on average of 18 times a minute. So, I’m putting my foot down- bedtime is at 8pm tonight, and the Hubbs is in charge of waking up with them tomorrow morning – which brings me to…
Step 3: Ask for help. You can’t expect your body to operate at it’s best when you aren’t feeling your best. It’s OK to ask for help so you can get back to kicking ass!
Step 4: Steam! Some prefer baths with Epsom salts, some like Neti Pots, I just like a regular shower. Do something to get some steam in to your sinuses, break up that pressure, and release the grossness up there.
Step 5: Stretch. Unless you are so sick you can’t stand up…or perhaps leave the toilet’s side… stretching is a great way to loosen up an achy body. Google some simple yoga poses- cat/cow, child’s pose would probably be my favorites for stretching the sick away.
Step 6: Eat clean. You may feel like ice cream is the only thing that will make you feel better, but that nasty minx is just a tease. Your body needs good clean food to run on normally, that need is intensified when it’s also fighting a virus ninja inside you. And if you can’t stomach much food right now, bone broth might be a good bet for you.
Step 7: Probiotics. Make sure you are taking a good probiotic as a healthy gut translates to a much stronger immune system!
Step 8: My secret weapon. My Mom is a huge believer in Cold-Eeze. Like to the point that I told her I never wanted to hear the name again because she was driving me nuts! I GET IT MOM, YOU LIKE COLD-EEZE. In my opinion, they taste DISGUSTING and are full of gross ingredients. Still, I’ve heard many people tell me how effective they are; so I decided to look up the ingredients and use them in just their pure form without the fillers. I created this drink after realizing we’d spent a small fortune on Jamba Juice Coldbusters over the years- oops! Anyway, drink this 2-3 times a day at the first sign of sickness, and thank me later.
Step 9: Heal. Allow yourself some down time, and be kind to your body. There is no magic cure, and expecting instant results is sure to lead to disappointment and stress.
Ingredients for my Magic Elixir:
- 12 oz orange juice
- 2 TBS Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 Serving Zinc, check your packaging for serving size… and be careful, too much zinc can make you throw up, feel nauseous, or have diarrhea – probably not the outcome you’d like when you’re already sick!
- 1 Serving Vitamin C, check your packaging for serving size
